Kewl Computer Penguins

This page deals with perhaps the kewlest, best known pingüino in the world today, Tux, the logo of the LINUX operating system [OS], which is only ten years old in 2004 -- so Happy Birthday, Tux, and many happy returns of the day!

What is so special about LINUX as compared with the two other main home puter OS? For one, it is UNIX based, first developed by Bell Labs in the early 1970s, and known for its modular design and relatively easy to use programming language. Second, and perhaps most importantly, is that it is what they call Open Source -- what that means is that, unlike Microsoft [also known as M$] Windows, it is virtually FREE! NO software to buy -- you can download the OS without charge -- you can play with it, develop it and add to the applications which are already available for it -- and can do most, if not all, of the things you already do with your computer -- play games, get online, send emails, read news, search for information on the Internet, do digital art work, ad infinitum. And NOT have to pay M$ a cent for a buggy OS, licenses, endure frequent crashes, worry about worms and all those other nasty critters, or constantly have to spend more money on updated software, calls to customer service, or downloading bug patches every week!

Because the basic Linux OS is exactly that, no frills or bells and whistles, there are some software providers who market a more attractive, ready to use package, including the so-called GUI [Graphical User Interface], which is simply what you see when you boot your PC or Mac [the Mac is also a personal computer = PC, but somehow most peeps seem to equate the term PC with Windows boxes] -- a desk top, icons of all kinds, file folders, applications, and all the rest, whereas bare bones basic LINUX is just a screen filled with words -- the kind I worked with in 1982 as a FORTRAN programmer -- how things have progressed since then!

Incidently, the Mac OSX is UNIX based, and at this time, the third most powerful/fastest computer in the entire world uses an array of Macs with OSX -- and it cost a teensy fraction of what a Windows-based supercomputer would have!

Athough I do have the software shown below, I have not had the time to check it out -- I am not the stereotypical geeky type to begin with. I may try loading it on one of my older computers just in case I mess something up, which is probable.

Feel free to contact me with other info which I might want to add to this page -- it remains a work in progress at this point.

Tux, the Linux operating system (OS) mascot/logo, the creation of Larry Ewing -- I am using this as the background for my pinguino pages

Linux is the brainchild of Linus Torvalds, and is open source UNIX, unlike the Microsoft Windows OS -- Apple Computer uses the UNIX platform

Why did Torvalds choose the cute little penguin for his Linux OS?

there are many kewl cartoons about Linux/Microsoft, this being the first I ever saw -- from the syndicated Fox Trot by Bill Amend

Tux now wears a hat, in this graphic that came on a brochure which included mention of Penguin Computing, in a software package [see below]

the hat he wears is a Red Hat, corresponding to the makers of Linux software of the same name -- in this case Linux 7

this is the boxed Red Hat 7.1 software package in which Tux, that fat in the hat, was found on the bound
